When [It] Strikes Me

I’ve been otherwise preoccupied the last couple weeks, but the final portion of my season preview (which you can read here) and the Week Behind, Week Ahead series will continue soon. In the meantime, I received a special treat from America’s top Baseball Ops guy, Drew Fann. Fann sent over the definitive list of walk-up songs in use for the 2013 Vanderbilt Baseball season. In conjunction with some requests I’ve received to provide a primer to the Twitter hashtags associated with each player, I present a guide to recognizing your Dores.

For those unfamiliar with the basics, each player is permitted the right to select a song that will play in short form (for when they come to bat) or longer form (for when they are warming while entering the game as a pitcher). Some folks choose wisely (like Tony Kemp), while some are Jared Miller (much love for you, JMills, but Taylor Swift is not acceptable).

With respect to the hashtags, there is a spirited universe of Vanderbilt baseball fans who follow the team on twitter. In addition to the main and @VandyBaseball account which provides regular updates, folks can follow local media personalities like @ChrisLee70 of VandySports, @JeffLockridge of the Tennessean and @JeromeBoettcher of the Nashville City Paper. Or you can follow the hashtag friendly stylings of me (@VUHawkTalk), @____Stu____ and @VUGymRat. While the more official guys eschew the use of hashtagged nicknames, some of us indulge in the name game.

Hashtags are also used for in-game action. The most common example of that is the #VanderBunt, a reflection of our proclivity to lay down the less tasteful straight sacrifice and the more aggressive bunt-for-hit. The greatly enjoyable alternative to this is the #VanderSqueeze, perfected by such folks as Connor Harrell, Jack Lupo and Mike Yastrzemski. A recent nominee is #GrandTheftCommo, for our often double- and sometimes triple-steals. But now for the players. We’ll include the twitter handles of the players, where available.
