Oh Lane, whatever shall we do in the SEC without you?

January 13th, 2010

I don’t know that there are any Vanderbilt sports fans that aren’t smiling tonight.  None of our teams (not even Women’s Bowling) was active to earn us a smiling victory.  No, for us, Florida fans, Alabama fans, Kentackalacky fans, Georgia fans and South Cackalacky fans it was the news out of Knoxville and Los Angeles.  The University of Southern California (U$C) had decided to replace the departed Pete Carroll with Boy Blunder, himself.

Urban Meyer wasn't getting texts about his health at the Kentucky-Florida game on ESPN. He was getting texts about a certain departing buffoon who never beat him.

Yes, the same Lane Kiffin who arrived in Knox County to much fanfare (and even more NCAA secondary violations).  The same Lane Kiffin who told a recruit that people who went to Columbia, South Cackalacky ended up pumping gas.  The same Lane Kiffin who said he’d be singing Rocky Top after beating Urban Meyer and the Gators.  The same Lane Kiffin who’s best quality was having a hot wife (and his second best quality was being a total and utter train wreck).

Tennessee fans are in meltdown mode with about 20,000 on right now and with a full fledged (okay, more like near) riot by students trying to get to Kiffin. Meanwhile, the rest of the SEC is pointing and laughing.  It’s hard to feel bad for UcheaT fans who just got gamed when two days ago they were proud of this huckster.  The funny thing is, though, that this probably is bad for all parties involved.

USC is at risk of getting hit by the NCAA with penalties for violations under the Carroll regime.  Hiring a guy who was the league leader in secondary violations and was censured by the SEC’s commissioner is probably not going to endear the Trojans to the NCAA.  And violations are bad for an incoming coach.

And Lane Kiffin is enough of a clown that he actually has trouble performing on the field.  His record at Oakland was Gene Chizek bad and he was only 7-6 for Tennessee this past year.  Could USC really not have done better?  I can’t think this was good for them.

It definitely wasn’t good for UT and AD Mike Hamilton, who had pretty much bet the farm on Kiffin.  Their campus and booster clubs are in meltdown mode and if they can’t land a guy like Will Muschamp from Texas, there will be hell to pay.  Houston Nutt is not the answer there.

The only real winner here is Mike Slive and the SEC head office.  One less headache.

Update: LSU Freak did his work overnight and got this awesome GIF up as well.
